Safety or Breakaway stirrups are designed to release your foot in the event of a fall. Safety or Breakaway stirrups have a quick release mechanism on the side of the stirrup that will open under pressure. If you fall the pressure will open the stirrup and your foot will be freed. Some safety stirrups come with rubber bands that should be replaced frequently.
