Breastplates are common piece of English tack that can be used in any event that requires jumping, or riding at speed over varied terrain. They help to prevent the saddle from slipping backwards when horses make big efforts over a fence. Breastplates can be transformed into a martingale via an attachment that connects to the metal ring at the center of the horse's chest. Breastplates come in a variety of leathers which include flat leather or plain raised leather. Breastplates also come in all sizes from pony size to oversize.
