Does my horse need a turnout sheet?

Turnout sheets, or lightweight turnout blankets, are the lightest of the turnout blankets.  These turnouts are constructed the same technology and fabrics as heavy and medium weight turnout blankets, but they don't have any insulation.

Light weight turnouts don't have any insulating fiberfill, but they are true turnout blankets. Despite being light in weight, they are waterproof and tough enough to withstand extended pasture time, and rough housing. A light turnout is, of course, ideal for the mild winters of Southern California and Florida, but they also make good all season turnouts in places with rainy summers.  If your horse needs something tough, light, and waterproof, a lightweight turnout is an ideal option.

Choosing the Perfect Turnout Sheet

So now that you've decided that your horse needs a turnout sheet, which sheet is the best for him? There are a variety of different styles and designs for turnout sheets, offered in a vast array of colors and prices.
First, you'll want to decide on the general shape of the sheet. Turnout sheets generally come in 3 different styles. The regular neck, the high/mid-neck, like the iconic Horseware Wug, and the full or combo neck. Regular neck turnout sheets can also be transformed into a full neck sheet with the addition of a separate neck cover. For most horses a regular neck turnout is a great choice, but if you have an older horse who is more sensitive to the cold, a higher neck option may be the better choice. Mid-neck rugs are also a great option for horses' whose manes are kept long, as it is less prone to rubbing the mane.
After you've chosen the shape of the sheet, you'll want to look at the denier of the fabric. The denier of a fabric is a general measure of the weight and durability of the fabric. The fabric used for turnout blankets generally ranges from about 600D,to 3600D. The higher the denier of the fabric the more durable it is going to be for your horse; additionally, higher denier fabrics tend to be more expensive. If your horse is turned out alone, or is less prone to hijinks out in the field a lower denier will serve you well, but if your horse is turned out with a group then a higher denier will last longer. If your horse is particularly rambunctious, then you may want to look at a sheet with a ballistic denier, such as Rambo Blankets, Shires StormCheeta or Bucas Sheets which are exceptionally strong.
