Why Wear Riding Chaps?

Equestrian Riding Chaps are used in both English and Western riding. Riding Chaps offer protection against rubbing for the rider's leg. To some extent, the extra grip that they provide will keep the rider's leg more still and less inclined to swing back and forth.
In the English disciplines, full chaps used to be very popular for schooling.  Recently, we have seen a move towards half chaps for schooling. In either case, the riding chaps replace tall boots.

For Western riders, full chaps don't replace their boots, but rather are used in addition to traditional western boots.  Full chaps add an extra layer of protection when reining, roping, or working cattle.
Additionally, for all disciplines Full Chaps are very useful during the winter months to provide added protection for the cold.  While you won't see a lot of full chaps in the schooling ring at Hunter/Jumper shows anymore, you can bet you WILL see them at hunter/jumper barns located in the colder parts of the country!
Ladies Half Chaps and Men's Half Chaps are generally the same; sizing is based strictly on leg measurements, while Kid's Chaps are proportioned specifically for children's bodies.
