All purpose saddles are designed to be used for just what it says - all purposes of English riding. These saddles allow the rider to do flatwork, jump a course of fences or do some trail riding, all in the same saddle. This is accomplished by having a saddle that is a middle ground between the close contact or the dressage saddle. The all-purpose saddle is not quite as upright and deep-seated as a dressage saddle yet not as forward as a close contact saddle. These english style all purpose saddles also allow for a variety of stirrup lengths as well as somewhat longer billet straps.
