What are the Common Types of English Spurs?

The Prince of Wales Spur is one of the most common types of spurs, and is generally the first type of spur that a rider will use. It is characterized by a slightly down turned flat end.

The Roller Ball Spur is characterized by the metal or plastic ball on the end of the shaft of the spur, which rotates slightly when the spur is used. This is a fairly mild spur and is less prone to leaving marks on sensitive horses.

The Swan Neck Spur is unique in appearance, having an upturned shaft that levels out at the end, which resembles the neck of a swan. This spur is commonly seen in dressage.

Roweled Spurs have a small wheel that spins. The rowel may have teeth or may be a plain disc. These are spurs are also frequently used by dressage riders.

The most common material for spurs is stainless steel, but composite or plastic spurs are becoming increasingly popular in the schooling ring for their lightweight design and easy wear.
