Horse Breastplates And Martingales

Why And When Are Breastplates and Martingales Used?

Breastplates are common in any event that requires jumping, or riding at speed over varied terrain. They help to prevent the saddle from slipping backwards when horses make big efforts over a fence. Martingales discourage the horse from evading the aids by tossing its head in the air.

Breastplates can be transformed into a martingale via an attachment that connects to the metal ring at the center of the horse's chest. These attachments are often included with the breastplate, or can be purchased separately. A regular martingale attaches to the girth and includes a neck strap to keep it in place, but does not directly attach to the saddle.
