Horse Hackamores

Use a Hackamore as an Alternative to a Bit

A hackamore is an alternative to a bit.  There are various types of hackamores, and they are used primarily in Western riding, but are occasionally seen in show jumping and endurance riding.

Basically, a mechanical hackamore works much like a curb bit in that it uses leverage pressure, but in this case on the horses nose. Hackamores can be used on mature horses with dental issues, or on horses with mouth or tongue injuries that would be aggravated by a bit. Some trail riders prefer hackamores in winter, to avoid putting frozen metal into a horse' mouth.

Caution:  It is a myth that hackamores are always gentler than bits.  Just like a bit, a hackamore is only as gentle as the riders hands!  Misuse of mechanical hackamores can cause pain, and even damage to a horse's face.
