What Are the Benefits to Riding in Breeches?

For comfort and safety, your young rider needs to have the correct clothing.  In the English disciplines, that means either jodhpurs (jods) or riding breeches.

While kids can certainly ride in a pair of jeans, they will be a lot more comfortable in a pair of riding pants, whether breeches, jods or riding tights.

Riding pants are generally made of stretch material for ease of movement and have no interior seams making them comfortable in the saddle and greatly reducing the risk of friction rubs.

What Type of Riding Pants are Best for My Child?

Breeches are the most common type of riding pant and are fitted at the calf and ankle making them the best option to be worn with tall boots, or with paddock boots and half chaps. If your child is just starting out consider the Knee Patch Breeches, while Full Seat Breeches are common in the dressage ring and Euroseat Breeches are a popular variety for the hunter show ring.

Riding tights are very similar and can be found in the same section as our breeches. Riding Tights are generally made of a lighter material and have an elastic waistband for ease and comfort during schooling.

Jodhpurs are similar, but they are designed to wear outside short boots, rather than tucked into tall boots.  Younger riders typically wear jods, and once a rider has graduate up to tall boots, they transition to breeches.
