Whether you wear a neck tie, or a stock tie, with your show attire depends largely on what discipline you are riding, and at what level.

Male Field Hunter riders, for formal hunts, generally wear a white stock tie. For cubbing, or more casual hunts, they will wear a necktie. Male Dressage riders in the upper levels will wear a stock tie, while male riders at the lower levels generally wear a neck tie (female riders wear a stock tie at all levels of Dressage). Male Hunter and Jumper riders (in the ring, not the field) will almost always wear a neck tie, unless they are competing a class that requires a shadbelly (formal tails). When shadbelly is worn, a stock tie is always the appropriate neck wear.

Event riders follow the rules for the phase they riding. At the higher levels, this will likely mean a stock tie for the Dressage phase and a neck tie for the Jumper phase.
