Down Jackets and Down Coats for Horseback Riding from Equestrian Collections

Down Jackets are in a class by themselves as far as outwear jackets are concerned. Even with all the technological innovations, good quality duck or goose down is still the warmest insulation out there. Natural down creates loft with tiny air spaces, these spaces hold warm air and create a "shell" of warmth all around you.

As warm as down jackets are, they do have some drawbacks when used by equestrians. The biggest problem with down is that is generally not waterproof. It is not ideal for use in wet conditions unless it is covered by a completely water proof out layer. Perhaps more problematic for horse people, is that down jackets tend not to be washer friendly. Horses are dirty! Barns are dirty! Winter horse work is dirty business and not being able to throw your jacket in the washer and dryer can be problematic for equestrians.

Still .. down is WARM. If you live and ride in a very cold climate, or if you spend a lot of time out of doors teaching lessons, or driving carriages in the cold, a good down jacket will be your best friend! Care for it properly, and your down jacket will keep you warm in extreme climates for years.
