LADIES SHOW JACKETS
The formal show jacket worn at most horse shows has its roots in fox hunting attire. Still often referred to as a Hunt Coat, the design has for the most part stayed the same. There are subtle differences that tag a particular hunt coat design as suitable for Hunt Seat classes, Dressage, Eventing and Show Jumping. To help you make your choice, you can filter your selection by your discipline and can be assured that the riding jacket you choose will be correct in style.
HUNT COATS
Hunt coats come in traditional dark and neutral colors and have 3 buttons, 2 side vents, notched lapels and 2 front slanted pockets. They are usually fully lined. So what separates an under $100 jacket from a $500 plus jacket? Usually, the base fabric of the riding jacket. The Polyester jackets are usually at one end of the spectrum, then Polyester/Wool Blends, Wool Blends, 100% Wool, Wool/Mohair, Wool/Silk, stretch fabric, waterproof fabric, washable fabric, stretch linings, fancy linings and piping - all make a difference to the overall pricing of the jacket.
DRESSAGE COATS AND DRESSAGE FROCKS
Dressage Coats have 4 buttons, one back vent, notched lapels, two straight flap pockets and often a seam at the waist. They are cut longer than a Hunt Coat. The same considerations drive the pricing on Dressage coats and Dressage frocks as you see above for Hunt Coats.
SHADBELLIES - HUNTER AND DRESSAGE
Usually worn at the higher levels and at show Classics where a rider has earned a placement at an end of season show, for example. The Hunter Shadbelly has a double breasted front fastening of dark colored buttons and the points can be Canary, other colors or Tartan. The tails are usually lined with leather or faux leather but are not weighted. The Dressage Shadbelly traditionally has a double breasted front fastening of 6 gold buttons and Canary points. The tails are leather or faux-leather lined and are weighted.
