Dressage Requires a Saddle Designed for the Discipline

Dressage Saddles are designed specifically for the needs of the Dressage rider and the Dressage horse.

A Dressage Saddle will have a much more upright profile, and longer skirt than other English saddles. This allows the rider to have a much longer stirrup and more upright position, thus putting them "deeper" into the seat. Many Dressage Saddles have extensive "holding" features, such as very deep cantles, and thigh blocks, both in front of and behind the rider's thigh. These features help the rider maintain a strong position, particularly during sitting, extended trot.

For the horse, most Dressage Saddles allow for freedom of movement of shoulder which is required for big trots.

Note: In general, you'll want to size up for a Dressage Saddle. Most people ride 1/2" - 1" larger Dressage Saddle than the do in a forward seat saddle.
