Horse Bosals And Mecates

Try a Traditional Bosal and Mecate for your Western Horse!

A Bosal is a noseband from the Vaquero tradition.  It is usually made of rawhide and functions as a type of hackamore, or bitless bridle.  Bosals sit loosely on the nose of the horse, only engaging when the rider acts on the reins, or Mecate.

Bosals come in a variety of widths and weights, with the thickest and heaviest used on young or green horses, and the thinnest bosals on finished horses.

The Mecate is a long rope, used as reins with a bosal.  Generally, this twenty to twenty-five foot rope is tied in reins, with a long free end end.  Frequently they have decorative tassels.
