Vitamin Supplements for Horses

Be Safe - Check with Your Veterinarian Before Using Vitamin Supplements!

When considering vitamin supplementation for horses, it is important to consider Selenium.  Selenium is a trace mineral that in minor quantities is essential for horse health.  However, in larger quantities, horses can overdose on Selenium.  While toxicity and death are uncommon, it can happen.

Selenium occurs naturally in a horse's forage.  Hence, when deciding on whether or not to supplement with Selenium, you must consider where you live, and where your hay comes from.  Some areas of the United States tend to be Selenium deficient - the Pacific Northwest, the Great Lakes, and the Eastern Seaboard down to Florida.  On the other hand, high levels of selenium based soils are found in areas such as Colorado and New Mexico.

When supplementing it is crucial to know how much, if any, selenium your horse needs.  Consult your veterinarian and your local agricultural extension to find out the selenium situation in your local area.
