Bits Designed with the Horse in Mind

What Makes Myler Bits Different?

The creators of Myler Bits®, Ron, Dale and Bob Myler, offer a philosophy behind each of their bits. The bit is a communication tool, and to effectively communicate with your horse, he must be relaxed. If your horse is resistant, he is not effectively receiving your message and needs a different bit, which allows him to relax.

The Mylers have designed an entire Bitting System to effectively communicate with a horse at any level of training. Based on bitting a horse appropriately through his training, the system works by releasing points of pressure and using softer bits as the horse progresses. Because of the bit variations available, the system may seem complex, but it is quite simple. Each mouthpiece is coordinated to a horse’s training which is generalized into four levels. These levels serve as a guide to bit selection as you match horse and rider needs.

Myler Bitting Levels

Level 1

The level 1 horse is young or green and is either just beginning its training, or it has a challenging disposition. This level is also appropriate for horses that are being ridden in a discipline that restricts bits to a single jointed mouthpiece.

Level 2

The Level 2 horses can be young or green with a steady disposition, or can be an older horse training for a new discipline. The horse has been ridden in a level 1 mouth piece and is showing resistance.

Level 2-3

The Level 2-3 horse has basic training with a good disposition and self control and can handle more tongue relief. Alternatively, this horse may have advanced training, but has a more challenging disposition, such as anxious, fearful or aggressive behavior. The horse has been ridden in a Level 2 mouthpiece and is showing resistance.

Level 3

The Level 3 horse has a solid disposition and is either a performance horse with advanced training or an experienced trail horse. The horse has been ridden in a Level 2-3 curb bit and is showing resistance.
