Traditional Australian oil skin was the first ever man made waterproof and breathable fabric.  It is made with tightly woven cotton that is saturated with wax and oil and then dried. Because it is made with cotton, the fabric retains the ability to "breathe" keeping you dry and comfortable. As the garment is worn, it begins to take on a slick, shiny, almost tanned appearance, hence the name "oil skin."
