Flex Free provides 1,750 mg of purified chondroitin sulfates in an easy to give alfalfa base. Introduced by Vita-Flex® in 1988, Flex Free® was the original chondroitin sulfate (CS) supplement for horses. Horses are subject to great wear-and-tear of the joints. Both can be characterized by the breakdown of the joint's cartilage, the part of the joint that cushions the ends of bones. Cartilage breakdown causes bones to rub against each other, causing swelling, pain and loss of movement. As the rate of swelling increases the breakdown of the cartilage also increases, causing a “vicious cycle.” Oral CS has been shown to reduce swelling in the equine joint, as well reducing certain protein markers in the synovial fluid, the fluid that acts as a shock absorber in the joints.
