With the bit being held in the mouth, in a central position, it is able to work more efficiently.  A balanced bit makes bending easier therefore encouraging your horse to step through with the hind leg in the required direction.  Downward transitions also become more balanced as the pressure in the mouth becomes more even, increasing comfort and calmness.
